Mordovnik (or Echinops) is a genus of perennial (sometimes annual) prickly herbaceous plants from the Astrovye family (or Compositae).

The plant got its name for the appearance of spherical heads with needles: for example, in Latin, Echinops means “hedgehog look” (or “similar to a hedgehog”).

This medicinal plant acquired its Russian name in honor of the Mordovian people. In addition, the name of the plant is associated with the word "mordaty", and all due to the round-headed form of the inflorescence of mordovnik.

Earlier in Russia, this plant was referred to under such names as the hedgehog of a hedgehog and a hedgehog, as well as Mordvinik, a shootout and a queen. But today these names either have completely lost their meaning, or are used to designate other plants. For example, Ezhovnik (or Echinochloa) is a grass from the family of cereals, whereas Tatarnik (Onopordum) belongs to the genus of closely related plants from the Compositae family.

What does mordovnik look like?

Echinops - a plant whose height varies from 30 cm to 2 m, forms bushes from fairly dense and hard stems, which are covered with gray-green lobed leaves, the ends of which have small thorns.

Straight and prickly stalks of a plant are most often solitary, although there are specimens in which there are several. The fleshy stem stem can be pubescent.

The leaves of Mordovnik are spiny (or rather jagged along the edge) and pinnately dissected (plants can be found with whole leaves). The leaves are arranged in a regular manner, with the leaves forming a dark green color at the top, and white-tomentose leaves below. Radical leaves are petiolate, while the rest are sessile.

The flower of the plant has a corolla of white color, dark blue anthers, and also light blue leaflets-wrappers (for the predominance of white and blue flowers, mordovnik is popularly called “white tarnik” or “blue-headed”).

The flowers of the plant are collected in spherical or oblong capitate inflorescences, the diameter of which is 3-5 cm.

It should be noted that Mordovnik differs from other representatives of the Compositae family by its inflorescence: thus, numerous single-flowered Mordovnik baskets are concentrated in a spherical basket of the second order, the wrapper of which is invisible and consists of small bristle-shaped leaves. Thus, each flower is “dressed” in a wrapper of many leaves and bristles, whereas the inflorescence itself, which is a spherical basket, does not have a common wrapper.

The fruits of mordovnik are achenes with a cupped tuft of a cylindrical shape, the length of which is 6 mm.

The seeds of the plant contain a large amount of fatty oil, characterized by a delicate pleasant aroma and lack of smell. Mordovnik oil is one of the best vegetable fats, it does not harden even at a temperature of –20 degrees.

Medicinal species of mordovnik

There are more than 60 species of mordovnik, only growing in Russia, and there are about 120 of them in total. In one degree or another, they all have healing properties, but official medicine recognized only some types of mordovnik:

Сбор и хранение мордовника

For medicinal purposes, use seeds (fruits), the roots and rhizomes of Mordovnik (all of the above types).

Seeds are harvested from late August to early September. The inflorescences are cut with scissors, and then laid out in the shade in one - two layers to dry, which is carried out outdoors in windless places.

Dried heads of the mordovnik are frayed to extract peeled seeds. The end of drying is determined by the degree of decay of the baskets.

Properly dried fruits of mordovnika, covered with adherent hairs, have an oblate-fusiform shape, a yellow-gray outer color and a grayish-white inner. The smell of mordovnik fruit resembles the smell of sunflower seeds.

The roots of the plant, cleared from the ground, dried in the open air or in dryers at a temperature of 50 degrees.

Raw materials are stored in fabric bags in well ventilated places.

The shelf life of the fruit - one year, the roots - two years.

Important! In the process of collecting and cleaning the fruits of mordovnik should work in a gauze bandage, gloves and goggles, since getting hair from the seed to the mucous membranes and skin can cause itching and burning.

Seeds (fruits)

Seeds of all species of mordovnik contain fatty oil and echinopsin, which have a beneficial effect on the work of the central nervous system.

Preparations based on the seeds of the plant are used in folk medicine for hypotension, atherosclerosis, muscle weakness, heart failure and psoriasis (in the latter case, it is recommended to use mordovnik in conjunction with a string, airom, hunters and celandine).

In a small dose, the ripe fruits of mordovnik have a mild tonic effect without any side effects.

The use of mordovnik in folk medicine

When exhaustion, neuritis, muscle atrophy, as well as paresis, paralysis, sclerosis, the following decoction will help.

1 tsp the fruit of mordovnik is poured with a glass of water and boiled for one or two minutes. Next, the broth is infused for half an hour, and then filtered and taken three times a day, before the consumption of food, one tablespoon.

Outwardly decoction is used for lotions for various skin diseases.

The infusion of mordovnik is indicated for hysteria and sexual weakness, for mental and physical exhaustion and disorders of the central nervous system. For its preparation 3 tsp. seeds of the plant are poured 250 ml of boiling water, after which the agent is infused for 12 hours. Strained through a double layer of gauze, the infusion is taken a quarter of a glass per day.

Outwardly, this tool can be used in the treatment of eczema, purulent wounds, boils.

Echinops in the form of tincture is used in the treatment of paresis, atherosclerosis, mumps, joint pain.

50 g of mordovnik seeds are poured 500 ml of vodka and infused in glassware for two months (this is how long it takes for the seeds to “give” all their healing substances to the tincture).

Tincture is accepted according to the following scheme: 1 tsp. once a day in the morning, on an empty stomach (about half an hour before breakfast). Accepted means for four months without a break. After the specified time, a 10-day break is made, after which the treatment can be resumed.

Medonos mordovnik ordinary

Mordovnik is one of the favorite plants of bees, because it blooms for more than a month, while the nectar secreted by one hundred flowers (recall that in the inflorescence their number can reach up to two hundred) contains up to 10 mg of sugar. It is impossible not to say about the high honey productivity of the plant, which is about 340 - 500 kg per 1 hectare (when it comes to mordovnik ordinary) and 700 - 1200 kg per 1 hectare (when collecting honey from mordovnik sharogolovogo).

Interesting Facts! The productivity of nectar increases every year, while (regardless of weather conditions) nectar stands out constantly.

Echinops honey

The honey obtained from mordovnik is distinguished by its delicate aroma, pleasant taste and light amber color. It should be noted that often mordovnik is a part of honey obtained from herbs.

Egg honey is not only tasty, but also very useful, as it contains valuable substances that have a beneficial effect on the body.

1. Toning of the heart and blood vessels.
2. Increased pressure.
3. Headache removal.

Mordovnik herb with advanced sclerosis

Today, one of the most severe and practically incurable diseases is multiple sclerosis, which is a chronic autoimmune disease, in which there are disruptions in the immune system, resulting in damage to the special sheath of nerve fibers, and this leads to a slow, but almost irreversible dysfunction of the nervous system.

This serious disease is treated by means that act directly on the immune system (we are talking about immunomodulators and immunosuppressants, although recently stem cell transplantation has been used to treat advanced sclerosis).

Patients with this disease suffer from increased muscle tone (or spasticity), so it is extremely important for them to reduce the manifestations of spasticity and tremor (trembling of limbs, head). If the disease is not cured to the full extent, then at least it will help to stop its development by the herb Echinopsin.

The alkaloid echinopsin has a strong stimulating effect on the central nervous system (it acts like strychnine, which stimulates neuromuscular activity).

Echinopsin not only enhances the reflex excitability of the spinal cord, but also tones the skeletal muscles, not to mention accelerating the recovery processes in the peripheral nervous system. During clinical studies, the stimulating effect of echinopsine was established, both for people with asthenic conditions, and for those who had good health, but suffered intense physical and mental stress. In addition, a marked improvement in the health of patients with multiple sclerosis was noted, in which the tremor and muscle tone decreased, and also the motor functions recovered to some extent (and in general, the well-being improved).

For the preparation of drugs for the treatment of multiple sclerosis 1 tbsp. 200 ml of vodka is poured over the seeds of mordovnik, then the product is infused in a dark and cool place for three weeks, periodically stirring. Strained through a triple layer of gauze tincture taken 30 drops three times a day, 20 minutes before eating, it is recommended to dilute the drug in 50 ml of water. The specified single dose is not subject to increase, as the plant has a toxic effect and can harm the body.

After a two-month course of treatment with the described remedy, it is necessary to take a 10-day break, and then repeat the course.

This tincture can be used as a rubbing: for example, one teaspoon of tincture is rubbed into the spine immediately before bedtime. When applied externally, the tincture restores the conduction of the impulse precisely along the nerve.

Tincture with muscular atrophy, paralysis, paresis and neuritis

1 tsp crushed seeds of mordovnik pour 100 ml of alcohol, then send the mixture to infuse for 14 days (the agent should be shaken daily). Strained liqueur is drunk 10 to 15 drops three times a day, just before the consumption of food.

Important! With psoriasis, as well as some other skin diseases, mordovnik has an anti-inflammatory effect. So, to relieve inflammation, the affected skin area should be lubricated daily with a mixture of three to four vodka or alcoholic tinctures, the main ingredients of which will be herbs such as calamus, string, celandine and St. John's wort. The method of preparation of tinctures from the listed herbs is similar to the preparation of tincture from mordovnik.
