But now cereal crops are gaining great demand and are turning from an unremarkable plant into a unique addition to garden design. Currently, about 200 varieties of similar greens are cultivated. Grasses for cottage

When growing cereals on its territoryGardeners choose a variety of varieties and varieties of plants. They may differ in color, and height, and features of care. However, before making a conscious choice, make sure that the biological requirements of a particular culture are appropriate for your area. After all, not all cereal plants take root in harsh climatic conditions, and many of them need enhanced care and attention. If you want to grow a beautiful green space that will conquer you for many years, stop at a group of perennials.

However, you should understand that there are other plant species in the list of ornamental grasses for giving, including members of the hornbill, rush and sedge family. Similar plantings can attract the attention of others at any time of the year.

  • in the spring, they are contrasting, bright green carpets, represented by elegant curtains,
  • in the autumn-summer period, they turn landscape design into a real work of art, which is emphasized by various forms of inflorescences (there are also panicles, and spikelets, and other forms),
  • in winter, decorative perennials look especially unusual and mysterious. Sometimes they resemble aliens from other worlds who literally seized the earth.

Even when cut, these plants look very elegant, turning into a chic composition in the form of dry bouquets.

It is important to note that among the advantages of ornamental grasses for the garden is not only their amazing beauty, but also lack of complex agrotechnical care techniquesThat strongly interests novice gardeners.

Many cultures freely tolerate excess moisture or lack of it, while remaining resistant to all sorts of pests and diseases. They are perfectly acclimatized with other cultures and are effectively combined with any green plantings. And if you have no gardening experience, do not be afraid, you will have no problems with such herbs.

Low-growing types of ornamental grasses

In the group of low-growing crops for flower beds are found and annuals and perennials. The latter are represented by a large number of varieties, hybrids and varieties.

By the way, in some conditions, grass is grown directly under the open sky, and in some - with periodic movement into a room or terrace. For example, prosomny, indoor bamboo.

Among the most popular undersized species are the following:

  • Barley maned. It belongs to the group of cereal ornamental annuals, which are grown only one year, because winter can freeze. It is characterized by unpretentious character and lack of difficulty in care. In the process of growth, the awns change color, which is clearly seen in different photos. When propagating at home, the culture chooses the method of self-seeding. The height of the barley rarely exceeds 20-50 centimeters, so it can rightly be called undersized. Nowadays, on the basis of the plant they create colorful decorations for carpet flower beds, borders, stony gardens and alpine slides. Often used as a frame for paths or paths,
  • Haretail. It has small inflorescences with a lush surface, due to which they strongly resemble a tiny hare's tail. The maximum height reaches 50 centimeters, while the culture can be attractive both fresh and dry. It is known that this plant is free to withstand penumbra, but this property is not typical for all cereals,
  • Blue fescue resembles a fluffy globular mound with a delicate blue color. It can also be an independent plant, and a numerous composition planted in rows along the tracks. Against the backdrop of dark stones and garden ponds looks very attractive. For 2 years it grows beyond recognition, therefore, at this age, the culture must be divided for a new planting. Due to the high winter hardiness calmly transfers cold winters even without shelter.

Medium variety cereals

It is difficult to imagine beautiful flower gardens and multi-tiered mixborders without medium-sized grasses that can grow up to 50-100 centimeters in height. The most attractive plant in this group are the cobbles. With a strong wind, they resemble puffy wave "waves". Can beautifully complement the lawn, especially if planted in plantings in groups. The combination with wild flowers, such as chamomile, poppy, and cornflower also looks beautiful. Consider the most popular names for medium grain cereals..

  • The feather grass has very unusual curtains (how they look can be seen in the photo). Among the most tender varieties, the most beautiful feather grass is very popular with characteristic pubescence in the form of thin threads that literally entangled the plant. Adult individuals grow to 80 centimeters in height. Culture is a perennial with thick turfs that can grow up to 10 years in one place. Transfer work doesn’t tolerate a feather grass, so if you want to plant it at home, choose a permanent place.
  • Setaria Italian. In most cases, such a cereal plant is grown for feeding purposes. However, its decorative effect is of particular value. The culture is distinguished by yellow or green panicles with a characteristic hanging down. Looks very nice as a tapeworm and group landing. Setaria can grow to large sizes and form lush bushes. Due to excellent drought resistance, it is quietly grown in hot climates. However, if you provide it with abundant watering, decorative appeal will be even better. Setaria can be used to create dry bouquets that retain an elegant shape for a long time.
  • The peristhistamine hairy. It belongs to the group of perennial plants with an incredibly high rate of growth. To avoid the chaotic spread of culture in the garden area, it is important to protect it with special structures. As it grows, it grows to 30-60 centimeters, forming panicles. Looks shaggy, because golden spikelets are surrounded by bristles.

Tall species of herbaceous plants

In addition to the above groups of cereals, tall plants are particularly popular. They can grow up to 1 meter in height, creating beautiful compositions from several levels. Very often they are placed in the form of screens and decorations for cozy and picturesque corners along the banks of the reservoir. Can create impenetrable "walls" of ears and panicles, blooming in the height of summer. Create a colorful background, because panicles can be colored in different tones.

  • Moliniya is blue. It is a very interesting ornamental plant, which belongs to the group of cereals. Adults grow up to one meter in height and do not show any requirements for conditions of detention. It is popular because of the grayish leaves and lilac inflorescences. In the dried form is a colorful composition in the form of flower arrangements and bouquets. Moliniya is often used to decorate the shores of artificial reservoirs, in a special way gracefully complements other garden shrubs or trees. In the autumn period, clues acquire yellow and orange colors, making the garden picturesque and irresistible.
  • Reed canker, another name is flyaris. Has found wide application in the arrangement of landscape designs. For home cultivation, only a variegated form with a height of 90-120 centimeters is suitable. From the photo it can be understood that these cereals look especially attractive, which is emphasized by green leaves with white or cream stripes. Maximum growth productivity is seen in solar conditions, although a slight shading is tolerated quite normally. The species has drought tolerance and winter hardiness. To make a particular form, you can cut falyaris.
  • Wild oats, or hasmantium broadleaf. With a single landing looks inconspicuous, but group compositions give the culture an incredible flavor. Inflorescences have a slightly oblate shape and are placed in a parallel manner. Sometimes it creates the feeling that there are earrings on the stem. For productive growth of a culture, it is enough to provide it with good moisture and light. When home content grows to 1.2-1.5 meters in height. The flowering period begins in the fall.

Types of decorative cereals

Cereals, like flowers, are divided into annual and perennial, thermophilic and frost-resistant, differ in height and speed of growth. Most of these plants have small and inconspicuous flowers, and are valued for the color and shape of the leaves. The decorative effect is fully manifested after the growth of the curtain or when sowing cereals of a certain area, but single plants cannot always boast such attractiveness.

Types of decorative cereals and their features

The plants with height from 15 to 40 cm are considered to be undersized. These grasses are indispensable in the design of borders, framed garden paths, look great in the carpet flower beds. Most often they are planted in rocky gardens, rock gardens and rockeries, creating an imitation of natural places.

An example of a garden decoration with decorative cereals.

Middle-grown cereals include plants with a height from 40 to 90 cm. Representatives of this group are very effective in group plantings, and are most often used to create multi-tiered flower beds. Elegant stems with bright panicles or spikelets give the effect of continuous flowering in mixborders, they also look good when planted in separate groups in the garden.

Grasses are considered tall, reaching a height of 90 cm. Usually they are used in multi-level flower beds as a background. In addition, plants planted in a row can function as a screen or screen, hiding cozy corners in the garden from prying eyes.

Plant selection

To create a composition of cereals and herbs you need to accurately calculate everything. Grasses grow better on poor soils, so you should not fertilize the land before planting. The abundance of nutrients in the ground leads to an overgrowth of clumps, the bushes no longer hold their shape and fall apart. This is especially true for tall cereals. Another important condition is good drainage. If water stagnates at the site, the roots of the plants will rot, which will necessarily affect the appearance and growth rate.

Soil moisture is of paramount importance when choosing plant species. To moisture-loving cereals include:

Falyaris in the design of the dacha

Badly tolerate moisture:

sandy pea in landscape design

When choosing plants, be sure to read all the information about them. Do not buy seeds just because the grass in the picture looks very beautiful. As is known, the decorativeness of leaves and inflorescences strongly depends on the location of the site and the composition of the soil. You need to focus on other criteria - height, ability to grow, resistance to cold and other negative influences. If you have not engaged in grasses and herbs before, get to start with 2-3 varieties of stunted annuals that do not require special care.

Rules of composition

If you decide to create a flower bed of cereal species, follow the basic rule: all plants in the same area should have similar requirements for growing conditions. In addition, the plants should be properly combined in colors (which may vary throughout the season), height and spreading of the bushes.

Cereals in landscape design

On a cereal flower bed, bright decorative elements are not welcome, it is better to use several picturesque boulders or to make dumping of small gravel. For multi-tiered beds and mixborders suitable low curbs, decorated with ceramic mosaic or natural stone. Grasses look very harmonious next to coniferous plants and rose bushes, perfectly combined with daylilies.

When disembarking near the gazebo, high fence, or wall of the house, the grasses can be combined with climbing plants, which will act as a background. Best for this is suitable wild grapes, hops, ivy and low-key vines of various species.

Arbor decoration with lianas

Of great importance is the size of the site. If the area is small, the presence of tall plants planted in separate groups will contribute to the shading of the garden and further reduce the area. In a spacious garden, on the contrary, high compositions of cereals are welcome, both in the form of flowerbeds, and as tapeworms.

How to land

First you need to prepare a place: the selected area is cleared of weeds and plant debris, and then dug deep. This can be done both in autumn and in early spring. It is not necessary to add humus or other fertilizers, as ornamental grasses and cereals prefer poor soil.

Preparing the soil for planting decorative cereals

Next, the ground level, give the site the desired shape. The next stage is markup. It is very important not to be mistaken with the size of the bush, because if you leave a little space, a neat flower bed will turn into dense thickets. Marking is performed with sand, outlining a place for each plant, taking into account the width of an adult bush. After marking, you can plant seedlings of cereals or sow directly seeds.

Think over where and what shape the flowerbeds will be, then make the markup.

Most cereals tend to grow strongly, inhibiting weaker plants in the neighborhood. To avoid this, you should think in advance about how to contain growth. For example, you can dig a strip of slate or plastic, setting the desired boundaries for each of these grains. Especially aggressive species are best planted in plastic containers of the appropriate size.

Consider the ability of many plants to grow quickly

Some grasses at the seedling stage can be oppressed by neighboring plants, therefore, it is not recommended to sow them directly into the ground. You can arrange a nearby small garden bed and sow the seeds there. Cereal seedlings are also planted there until it is strong enough. When the plant develops well and begins to form a bush, it can safely be planted in a permanent place.

There are some cereals that we do not overwinter without a good shelter, for example, pampas grass. But there are more than enough frost-resistant cereals! It is best to plant the following grains in your garden: hair-shaped millet, bar-shaped millet, blue molin, coarse-bee bonfire, sharp-flowered reed flower, maned barley, whipping (breeze), oval lagurus, sugar-shaped miscanthus, hair-shaped barley, visor, ovary, ovoid, sucrotophagous musculus, hair-diving barley, prospered, ovoid lagurus, sucrotophilous musculus, hair-raising barley, visor, ovary, ovoid, sucrotophilous musculus, hair-diving barley, prospered, ovoid lagurus, sucrotophilous musculus, hair duster, ovary, and oviform, ivy-shaped agarica, sucrotophilous muslinus, hair duster, ostrich, ovoid lagurus, sucrotophilous musculus, hair duster, ovary, and oviform, oval-shaped agaric flower, flagellated barley, ostrich beetle, ovoid lagurus;

Miscanthusy for landscape design

If you look at the photo and examples of the use of cereals in gardens and city parks, it is easy to guess that such cultures look truly elegant and irresistible. Among the most popular of them - miscanthus.

In our area, only two ornamental perennial forms are cultivated, which create large turfs. This cereal giant can be called the most popular, because he has almost no competitors in terms of effectiveness, the abundance of forms and varieties. In addition, the species perfectly copes with negative temperatures and adapts to any conditions.

Among the most popular varieties of cereal miscanthus:

  • Miscanthus giant. It is a hybrid variety of unknown origin. Erect stems with rigid and linear leaves look very impressive. Turf has a high rate of "spreading", and the flowering period begins in late summer, during which pinkish panicles appear. As they grow further, they become silvery shades. Very often the variety is used for setting the background in the background of the flower garden,
  • Miscanthus Chinese.
The flowering period begins in July, but at the expense of colorful foliage, the plant retains beautiful attractiveness for a long time, right up to the first frost. Prefers solar open areas, so in shaded conditions may not bloom at all. The most comfortable climate for growing is moist and warm.

When choosing a variety you need to understand that many miscanthus are thermophilic and do not tolerate harsh climatic conditions.

Blue fescue

Blue fescue (Festuca glauca) is a perennial cereal in the form of a blue fluffy hemispherical hummock up to 40 cm high. It looks very good against a background of stones and ponds, while it is a completely independent plant that will not get bored in single plantings.

Blue fescue

Winters quietly without shelter. It grows strongly and quickly, so once every 2 years the grass of the blue fescue should be divided to update the plant. Seed propagation is also possible: they are sown in spring or near winter. In the hole put on 3 seeds at a distance of about 20 cm from each other.

Pogonaterum Prosperous

At this place, many may be surprised, because it is believed that the pogonaterum prosovidny (Pogonatherum paniceum) is a home plant, often referred to as “indoor bamboo” or “indoor cane”. But in fact it is cereal, it belongs to the family of bluegrass and is used for planting in pots and other large containers. For the summer, it is quite possible to decorate the garden pots and the open terrace with pots with a dressing room. In the southern regions can winter in open ground.

Pogonaterum in open ground

As a plant of the open ground, the pogonatrum proospecific is successfully cultivated in southern Russia.

Setaria Italian

One of the varieties of setaria is chumiza known to many, which is grown in some regions as a fodder plant. But many gardeners appreciate it for their decorativeness: the Chumizzes have large yellowish or green drooping panicles that look great both in the ensemble with other plants and in solos. The second type of setaria is known here as a mogar or bristle. Its brownish panicles are smaller in size, grow straight.

Setaria Italian

Setaria bushes are large, sometimes even higher than 1 m. This decorative grass loves heat, sun and fertile soils. Resistant to drought, but with regular watering more decorative. The plant has won the love of designers of dry bouquets, as dried panicles perfectly keep their shape (they do not crumble). And in the cut, in combination with other plants will look no less original.

Barley barley

About the maned barley (Hordeum jubatum) they say that it is stately and igriv. In my opinion, it is more than self-sufficient in the world not only of cereals, but also ornamental plants in general.

Barley barley

It is a perennial, but more often it is cultivated as an annual crop due to its freezing properties in the winter. Maned barley forms dense bushes up to 50 cm tall with a scattering of shoots, on which are inflorescences-spikelets with very long awns.

At the time of flowering, the stem of barley is maned pearl green or pink-purple

At the time of flowering spine pearl green or pink-purple, and when dry, turn white. With proper care, the maned barley not only does not freeze, but also gives excellent self-sowing. A closer look at this amazing plant can be in the article "Barley grivasty."

Cortaderia

Cortaderia (Cortaderia), also known as pampas grass, forms a spectacular sprawling bush, topped with a cap of fluffy inflorescences. Tall species are stunningly beautiful (under favorable conditions grows up to 3 m) species, but also stunted varieties are no less good.

Cortaderia (pampas grass)

The main condition for beautiful flowering is a lot of sun. The pampas grass looks very unusual on the coast of the Crimea (Elegant sultans of pampas grass). But what prevents us from inviting her to our garden?

Penisetum bristly

Pennisetum is able to give a bed of airiness and a festive look: bright drooping inflorescences-panicles on long stems are somewhat reminiscent of fireworks.

Penisetum bristly

It looks very impressive next to coniferous crops (spruce, juniper, cypress).

Pennisetum gray or decorative millet

Another handsome member of the Pennisetum family is the gray pennysetum, he is also an American peasant, he is African millet. Decorative species are decorated with dense panicles (from red to black, depending on the variety) and brown-purple or gray-gray leaves.

African millet is thermophilic, but tolerates low temperatures. It is possible to use both in mixborders, and in single landings. I like this kind of cereals in the cut, and the dried plant perfectly preserves the shape and color.

In notes Decorative millet and Decorative millet ripened on personal experience of growing pinnesetum.

Shaggy bristles

Here is another pliable player, completely different from its American counterpart, but no less beautiful. This perennial grows strongly and quickly, so it is worth it to limit something.

Plant height can vary from 30 to 60 cm. The leaves are thin and flat, panicles spicate (up to 10 cm). Golden spikelets are surrounded by feather-hairy setae, which is why it seems shaggy.

Miscanthus forms lush tall bushes up to 2 m.

Long leaves, playful golden, golden-pink or silver paniculate inflorescences.

Horsetailtail

This cute grass fully justifies its name: its small fluffy inflorescences really look like a hare's tail. The haretail, it is the oval lagurus (Lagurus ovatus) can reach a height of a little more than 50 cm, the spikelike inflorescences themselves are about 3-4 cm long.

Lagurus

We are loved by many gardeners not only for elegance, but also for high decorative qualities in dry compositions. This plant can grow in partial shade, which makes it possible to plant in places where other ornamental grasses cannot grow.

Decorative sorghum

Very original annual cereal with inflorescences in the form of an unusually large dark brown loose ear with round grains. Sorghum leaves are wide, dark green, their size also gives some unusualness to the plant.

Decorative sorghum

It is used both in group plantings, and singly, as a background for other cultures. Suitable for spectacular winter tracks. Sorghum tolerates cold and is soil-free.

    Perennial vegetation

For the correct choice of decorative perennials for the garden area you need to study the characteristics of their growth and frequency of flowering. For example, a plant called ophiopogon is very popular. Due to the leaves of ofiopogon, having a black color (variety Nigrescens), you can add exotic notes to the natural landscape.

Even in half-shaded areas, this plant will stand out for its unusual color. Over time, ofiopogon will grow and take more space.

This plant belongs to perennials, so in the winter there is no need to embed its foliage. But it is desirable, nevertheless, to cover it with fallen leaves, so that during severe frosts it does not die. Originally, ophiopogon was grown in mild climates.

Another successful perennial plant for decorating the garden is miscanthus. The most popular is the Chinese variety of miscanthus with motley foliage of bluish-emerald green with stripes. These plants can reach a height of two meters. The most interesting bloom is Early Hybrids, which forms panicles.

In order for the plant to grow normally, it needs semi-shaded or well-lit terrain plus loose soil. From time to time you will have to feed the soil.

Many owners of country plots use Variegatum varieties in landscape design. This plant is able to withstand low temperatures. The color of the foliage of ryegrass is contrasting, it also has bulbballs that grow next to it when it hits the ground.

Another plus of this plant is growth in arid areas: it can be used to decorate areas beyond which it is difficult to provide constant care. Ryegrass stands out for its colorful appearance.

Perennial plant pike turfy is also used for gardening gardens. Most often it is planted near artificial ponds, near stones. As they grow, pike bushes acquire a rounded configuration, and a number of varieties also have variegated shades.

If you want to fill the natural landscape with colors, plant a blue lightning garden in the garden. Soft blue color is complemented by white stripes contrasting with the sun rays. Blue prayer lines can grow in shady areas. For optimal growth, it needs cool conditions and a sufficient amount of moisture.

Looks great this plant in combination with rose bushes and geraniums.

Oregano is the most popular fragrant plant used for garden decoration. The height of this grass is about 75 centimeters, the leaves of it are elongated and pointed, saturated green color.

Oregano blooms from early summer to late autumn.

Another popular spicy perennial is hyssop. This plant is a small bushes with elongated leaves, it tolerates arid conditions and cold, can reach 70 centimeters in height. The lower branches have a green color and gradually acquire a brown tint. Hyssop flowers - rich blue color.

    Selection of sedge

The most popular sedge species are with yellow and variegated foliage. Vegetation with decorative foliage is more difficult to adapt to existing conditions. But most of the species survive the winter without problems.

For example, in the landscape design of the garden you can use the hung sedge: it can grow up to 1.2 meters. In the flowering season, “earrings” appear on the plants. This variety needs water, so it is preferable to plant it near water bodies, combining it with Badan and hosts.

No less attractive looks in the design of the dacha palmolistnaya sedge. It can be planted in wet areas. Most gardeners choose stunted varieties.

Evergreen vegetation belongs to the Morrow variety. After melting snow, you can see that sedge retains its original form even after a long winter. This plant looks like a low hummock. For optimum growth, it must be planted in half-shaded areas with wet soil.

Winged sedge is not as common as others. The height of the plant reaches 30 centimeters, grow in wet areas, tolerate frosts well. To preserve the variegated leaf color, plant this species of sedge in sunny areas.

Another species of sedge - mountain - is similar to low hummocks. The foliage of the plant is thin, in the beginning of summer it kicks out the black spikes. Mountain sedge is not recommended to be planted in wet areas and in dry areas.

It is best to plant it in the vicinity of other low-growing plants near the borders.

The rusty sedge gradually grows over the area and forms a curtain. In late spring, the plants expelled the ears of pink. The rusty sedge is able to bloom both in the sun and in the shade.

A low poultry sedge has long leaves, creeping like curls, encircling the hummock. Variegata is resistant to low temperatures, but in spring foliage can burn. This variety does not tolerate drought and dampness.

Planting in suitable places and proper care for different varieties of sedge will successfully complement the garden decor. Ornamental species of sedge blend well with hosts and plants of the fern family. They can be planted next to bells, balls and other vegetation.

    Registration of cereal crops

We continue the selection of ornamental vegetation for the dacha and proceed to a detailed examination of cereals. Perennial cereals may have different sizes. Considering this moment, think well of possible options for their combination.

One of the most beloved by summer residents of tall cereal crops used in the landscape design of the cottage and garden is filaris, or the canary of reeds. It can reach a height of 1.5 meters. Filaris calmly tolerates rain, wind gusts and other natural influences. But note that this plant is aggressive, so it must be protected from other vegetation.

Having creeping roots, it is able to grow intensively even in arid zones on the ground, not differing in fertility. But the most optimal for the growth of filaris is wet conditions, well-lit or half-shaded areas. This decorative plant blooms in the first month of spring.

In a flowerbed decorated with cereal plants, you can plant a tall feather grass. This plant is preferably planted in well-lit places in the ground without excessive moisture. The hairy kovyl has green foliage with a bluish tint and white inflorescences.

    Cereals in the garden, photo

Another variety of tall grass, suitable for the decoration of the garden area - is the acute-flowered reed grass. It is able to grow in various conditions, but for the winter period, the reed grass needs to be covered with something so that it does not freeze. Even clayey soil is suitable for this cereal, but such soil is unacceptable for other cereals.

The flowering of this plant is early and short. This decorative grass forms hillocks on a garden plot and can be used to supplement other vegetation, for example, daylilies or multi-colored asters.

    Decorative cereals: photos and names

If you are going to decorate the area with cereals that have an average height, give preference to a plant called helictotrichon that grows up to 50 centimeters. As the helictiktotrichon is spreading, it acquires the shape of a rounded hummock.

It grows in sunny and arid areas, does not tolerate high humidity. In the process of transplanting it is easy to damage, so you need to be careful.

It usually combines with coniferous vegetation, meadow grassland, or yellow barberry. Another successful partner for this plant is sandy sandmill.

To create a picturesque decor on the summer cottage will help low fescue. For example, decorative fescue with gray foliage is planted next to the stones. Она представляет собой округлый кустарник, высота которого составляет 30 сантиметров.

Ornamental grasses and cereals for the garden: photo and names

Due to the variety of forms, ornamental grasses are used as ground cover plants, as background perennials, when creating rockeries or alpine slides. They can grow near ponds, and in the scorching sun, and in full shade, even in marshy or, on the contrary, dry soil. These are completely unpretentious plants, if they choose the right ecological niche.

In early spring nature awakens and along with it the first sprouts turn green cereals. In the summer, when it rained, dewdrops in the sun glittered and sparkled on the leaves of cereals. In autumn, among the yellowed leaves and wilted, unattractive perennials, they play a leading role in the garden, and delight in abundant flowering. And in winter, when nature seems to be asleep, they are so beautifully sprinkled with frost.

It is appropriate to plant ornamental grasses near water bodies, among shrubs, at the foot of an alpine slide, perennials, and so on. With them, you can experiment as you please. And well-chosen compositions never bother your eyes. When purchasing and placing seedlings of cereals in the garden, be prepared for the fact that they will most likely have to be transplanted from place to place, as they usually sell a small nondescript something that only with time manifests its strength and character. And then it is possible for him to choose a position in the garden that is advantageous from the point of view of design.

Of course, all the perennial decorative cereals cannot be collected in a small article, but we will select the most popular and relatively stable for our region:

Decorative cereals and herbs in landscape design

For simplicity, growers divide cereals into three categories by size: high, medium and low. Tall cereals can be planted between ornamental shrubs, thereby giving the garden bulkiness. For this, several separate nests of ornamental grasses will suffice. Medium-sized cereals can be used as intermediate plants in a flower garden. For example, plant them in front of delphiniums, phloxes, autumn asters, etc. And low plants will fit on the alpine hills, in the foreground of the flower garden, as curbs.

    1. Evergreen evergreen
    2. Barberry Thunberg Artopurpurea Nana,
    3. Echinacea purpurea,

Particularly beautiful look cereals in autumn in September - October, when they bloom with late perennials (for example, with chrysanthemums). They can also be used as a hedge - it all depends on the density of planting. In the garden, cereals can be something of a curtain, an additional background for flowering species. Cereals will give the garden a kind of graphic structure and will help to highlight accents. Even regular plant shapes contrast well with round or flat shapes. In the combined plantings with small deciduous shrubs and conifers look even better.

The disadvantages of decorative cereals include the rapid growth of some species, so check them out if you do not want them to occupy a large area. Take a closer look at the cereals, and they will definitely become the main assistants and unpretentious friends in your garden! Ornamental grasses and cereals for the garden are very friendly.

The use of cereals in landscape design

Garden cereals can be perennial or annual. This characteristic directly affects the creation of beautiful compositions. Perennials (more of them) will look no less expressive in the next season after disembarkation, and annuals will not survive the winter - next year they will have to be sown anew. Before choosing a variety, it is important to know its other features:

    • height,
    • resistance to low temperatures
    • drought tolerance,
    • need for sunshine.

Attention! Among the important characteristics there is no color. All cereals have a soft weak color gamut.

Cereals in landscape design are primarily attractive leaf shape. Some of them bloom, but flowering is not the main decorative value of plants. They are very tenacious. Most varieties do not need nutritive soil. This is a great solution for decorating a site with poor soil. Moreover, cereals should be kept from growing. Without control and restrictions, they will quickly capture new areas in the garden, stifling other cultures.

Low-growing decorative cereals in landscape design

The easiest way to classify these plants is by height. The height of low-growing species varies in the range of 15-50 cm. As a rule, they are used as border decorations or for edging garden paths and paths. Also cereals include compositions of rock gardens and flower beds.

Blue fescue is among the most popular ornamental crops. It grows up to 40 cm. Perennial is a bump-hemisphere of blue or gray color. Due to its color, this grass looks great in the decoration of artificial reservoirs or against a background of stones. It can also be planted and solo. Fescue is growing very quickly. Grass is planted in spring or autumn. Once in two seasons, the beam can be divided to propagate and rejuvenate the plant.

Another low-growing representative of cereals is maned barley. Height - up to 50 cm. Its luxurious lush inflorescences of pink-purple or pearl-green color (later white) will complement any compositions with other colors, especially those that bloom not for long. In nature, it is a perennial, but it is poorly adapted to the climate of the middle lane. In winter, barbed mane often freezes, therefore it is used as an annual. In the warm season, the plant normally tolerates sunlight and cold rainy periods, but is afraid of heat and drought.

Butelua (buffalo or grazing grass) can easily replace a turf cover. This perennial is extremely unpretentious: does not need watering, steadfastly copes with drought, grows without supplements. Butelua does not need to mow, since it does not exceed 20 cm in height. The inflorescences of the grass are small and one-sided. During the summer, they will change color from bright red to brown, and then become pale yellow.

    Srednerosly cereals in landscape design

Usually their height is 50-90 cm. Such plants are appropriate to use in multi-tiered compositions or planted with separate decorative islands. Also, cereals are grown in mixborders. It is possible to consider sapling vivorus medium shedding. He is very similar to fescue, only his blade of grass above (about 50 cm) and spreading. Bundles look beautiful on a regular bed, combined with wood chips, bark or stones.

The beautiful feather grass is available and popular. It is planted with flower pillows on the lawn or in mixborders. Perennial grass is drought tolerant, but it does not tolerate excess moisture, so it is important for it to organize drainage. Gray crystal strings look soft and subtle. A feather grass grows up to 80 cm. They are decorated with flower beds or stony elements of decor.

An interesting and nontrivial look in the landscape is the lagurus ovoid or cattail. At the ends of the stems he grows white fluffy spikelet. The haretail compares favorably with other grasses by its ability to grow in shady places. Its height is about 50 cm.

    Tall varieties of cereals

Such cultures occupy a special place in the decoration of the landscape. Most often they are soloists in decor. Although they can act as a background, especially in multi-tiered compositions. Also with the help of these plants on the site create live screens. Among such cereals there are a lot of amazing or even amazing imaginations:

Miscanthus Forms 2-meter spikes with long leaves and silver, golden panicles with a pink tint. Bushes grow luxuriantly.

Despite the absence of bright elements, all decorative cereals in landscape design look fresh and juicy. It is only important to correctly fit them into the interior of your garden.
